In Marin this 4,000 sf. remodeled hillside home was designed to improve the curb appeal of the exterior while the majority of the work focused on opening up the interior spaces to the views beyond. The new façade glows with a shimmering new standing seam metal roof, chimney cap and aluminum and sandblasted glass garage door. The entry has a new stone floor; walnut and sandblasted glass french doors and subtle lighting highlight new planting areas.
The new living room has a 2-way fireplace open to the dining area sharing views of the fire. The entryway wall is transformed into a sleek piece of walnut furniture – doors and drawers on either side open to create coat closets, napkin and tablecloth storage and home entertainment equipment centers. A wall that divided the dining from kitchen is gone creating an inviting visual corridor. Flooring materials include cumaru wood and Inca Blue stone and all the materials have been integrated to create a warm balanced palette illuminated by new lighting.
View from the new kitchen shows the new walnut clad storage display wall and fireplace that divides the dining from the living room. The bar counter is of black concrete with glass drum shaped lights and long dining room chandelier. All the way to the back is the dark brown hall to the bedrooms with new privacy wall at the living room.
The new kitchen bar counter sits where a wall was originally. Two species of wood were used in the cabinets, walnut and alder. The lighter colored cabinets at the back wall are in alder with Zodiaq countertops and the backsplash utilizes colored sandblasted glass tiles.
A detail of the kitchen bar counter illustrates the rich mix of colors and materials which blend to form a rich but cohesive palette.
The stairwell down to the lower level was filled with windows and playful lighting to frame a spectacular view.
