Located in the Los Feliz hills of Los Angeles, this whole house makeover included combining what were a separate dining room and kitchen into one great room for both. The kitchen then became the focal point of the house, with the island as the centerpiece. The kitchen island features several different heights of counters for different types of uses, such as display, preparation, and eating. A large light trough was carved out of the ceiling, and the Akimbo table and chairs, custom designed by Ohashi Design Studio, sit in the dining area of the room facing beautiful views of the city beyond.
The kitchen is a blend of woods – oak on the floor, two tones of ash cabinets, walnut dining table and chairs, and natural Douglas fir and sandblasted glass doors all come together to create a rich and harmonious environment. This was intended to provide a counterpoint to the stainless steel appliances, plumbing fixtures and range hood. Similarly, the lighting is a blend of incandescent-balanced fluorescent lights in the ceiling soffit and low voltage quartz halogen light sources in the hanging ceiling pendant fixtures and in the Puklights that provide uplight over the cabinets and under the upper cabinets washing the countertops. The fabric of the Akimbo chair in the foreground is a thickly striped composition of reds.
A detail of the kitchen counter area shows how all these elements come together. Granite counters finish the composition along with bamboo window shades. Viking appliances are used throughout, and a stockpot filler faucet sits to the upper right of the gas range. The kitchen was designed with the assistance of Kitchen Design Studio in Los Angeles, and the cabinets are by Rutt of Canada. The hanging lights are by Flos for the dining room chandelier, and Tech Lighting over the island.
