In this total renovation in San Francisco, two aging apartment flats were combined to make one brand new residence. The basic shape of the existing building remained unchanged, but everything else was torn down and rebuilt. Here at the street faïade, eight-foot high double doors flanked by side lights open onto balconies enclosed by strands of steel cables. Two shades of integrally colored stucco replaced the old terrazzo and wood siding.
Past the entry gate at the side of the house and up a narrow set of stairs is the front entry. A double height space enclosed with commercial aluminum windows waits at the top of the stairs. The panes of glass at the lower portions are sandblasted for visual privacy, while the upper panes are left clear for views and sunlight.
The front door opens into a double height space criss-crossed by a glass-floored steel bridge and steel stairs with floating wood treads. The sandblasted full height sliding doors with aluminum frames open into the office on one side, and the master bedroom on the other. The Brushbox wood floors are raised two steps above the limestone entry to create additional height.
The walls of the entry reach up into a large skylight that casts light and shadow through the clear glass floor of the bridge.
Upstairs, the angled bridge connects the living room with the sitting area.
Looking the other way toward the bridge is the living area with panoramic views of the Bay. The freestanding fireplace is clad in cherry wood and granite.
In the master bathroom are two glass sinks on a stone counter, and a sauna accessed through the shower. A full height window (not seen here) allows more views into the sauna. Natural hued materials add to the comfort of the space.
